Two months later, she walked back into the gym with two infant car seats in tow and experienced firsthand how challenging postpartum workouts can be. This planted the first seed of inspiration for her women-centric fitness coaching business, Mom Bun MVMT.
A long-time Milton resident, Jessica pursues her passion for fitness after hours while working full-time in HR and parenting her two five-year-old kids. With such a busy schedule, she is well-acquainted with the struggle many moms face in making time to care for themselves. In contrast, during her maternity leave, she saw women facing societal pressures to work out too intensely.
“I was really annoyed with the messages I was seeing shoved to new moms about getting the pre-baby body back, and just being told to go too intense,” she says. “I decided to take my experience and what I felt women needed in the community, and I [realized] I really have something to offer.”
With years of teaching Muay Thai and boxing under her belt, Jessica created Mom Bun MVMT in 2023 to offer a gentler and more accessible way for women to work out. Her compassionate approach empowers women at all stages, from pregnancy to postpartum and beyond, to pursue their fitness goals in a welcoming environment.
“They’re going to come into this space and they’re going to feel included and accepted,” she says. “They’re going to be challenged, but they’re going to be allowed to truly go at their own pace.”
Jessica’s thoughtfully tailored sessions aim to remove some of the biggest barriers women face in pursuing fitness, like childcare. Private training sessions are hosted in her home studio, which offers amenities like playmats, allowing babies to tag along. Moms are also encouraged to bring their kids to group classes, a supportive environment filled with like-minded women. You’ll even catch Jessica holding little ones while coaching.
For parents of children with special needs, affordability can be another significant barrier. To help combat the often prohibitively high additional expenses of this care, Jessica customizes prices for her coaching services, allowing caregivers to invest in self-care within budget.
Jessica designs her workouts to meet the unique needs of moms at every stage, offering low-impact exercises. They forego jumping and hardcore stroller fitness while focusing on conditioning, strength training and post-partum rehabilitation.
Her classes support women’s physical health, but their impact extends much further, creating a meaningful source of community.
“The class is full of just your everyday moms from Milton and all stages of motherhood, and even though we are at all these different stages, there’s this thread of connection between us,” she explains. “If you show up and you just want to sit there with us for that class – by all means!”
As a music fanatic, Jessica strives to leave you laughing and make workouts fun through her ‘90s soundtracks and her low-pressure approach.
“There’s always someone dancing or singing all the songs,” she shares. “Every workout doesn’t need to be 100% either. If you have been up for the last four nights with a sick, colicky baby – show up, move around a bit, laugh with each other, listen to the good music, and then you’re going to leave in a better mental state.”
Jessica teaches Tuesdays at Ignite Fitness classes focusing on strength and conditioning using weights. Thursday classes at Cardoso Boxing & Muay Thai include heavy bags and cardio. She offers occasional virtual classes via Zoom for those who prefer to work out at home with a live instructor.
Jessica also hosts Mom Buns in the Park sessions to increase access to fitness and give back to the community. These free drop-in classes at Victoria Park welcome participants of all ability levels.
